The Dump Truck Brake Shoes are a key component in the brake system that directly rubs against the brake drum to achieve deceleration. It looks like a "half-moon-shaped metal plate":
Structure: The inner layer is a solid metal base plate (skeleton), and the outer layer is covered with wear-resistant friction material (similar to high-strength sandpaper). It is installed on the inner side of the brake drum of the wheel. When the brake system is in action, it will expand outward and close to the inner wall of the brake drum to generate friction.
Working principle: When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the air pressure or hydraulic system pushes the shoe to open, and the friction material rubs violently with the rotating brake drum, converting the kinetic energy of the truck into heat energy, thereby slowing down or stopping the wheel, similar to holding a rotating wheel with your hand to stop it from turning.

Why Do Dump Trucks Need Special Shoes?
Dump trucks are used to transport heavy goods such as construction materials and ores, and face three special challenges when braking:
How To Judge Whether It Is Time To Replace The Shoes? 3 Warning Signs
Insufficient thickness
The friction material thickness of the new shoe is about 15-20 mm, and it must be replaced when it is worn to less than 5 mm (it can be observed through the wheel gap or measured with a ruler).
Abnormal brake noise
"Sizzling" or "metal friction sound" is heard when braking. It may be that the shoe is worn to the limit, and the internal alarm iron sheet contacts the brake drum, which requires immediate repair.
Soft brakes
When braking, the pedal travel becomes longer, the braking distance becomes significantly longer, or the vehicle deviates when braking. It may be that the brake shoe of the dump truck is worn or the surface is burned, resulting in a decrease in braking force.

Key Points For Purchase And Maintenance
Choose the right model
Different brands and models of dump trucks may have different shoe sizes and curvatures. The vehicle model must be provided when purchasing to avoid buying the wrong one and not being able to install it.
Preferential wear-resistant materials
It is recommended to choose semi-metallic or ceramic shoe for dump trucks, especially for vehicles running on mountain roads and heavy loads. Ceramic shoe is expensive but has a longer life and lower overall cost.
Regular inspection and maintenance
Check the shoe wear every 10,000-20,000 kilometers, and check whether the brake drum has cracks and grooves to avoid "hard collision" between the shoe and the worn brake drum to aggravate damage.
