The most crucial difference is the system they are designed for: Brake pads are used in disc brake systems, commonly found in passenger cars and SUVs (mostly front or all four wheels). They are flat and rely on calipers to clamp the brake disc for braking. Brake shoes are used in drum brake systems, often found on the rear wheels of trucks and older cars. They are curved and installed inside the brake drum, relying on a caliper to expand and fit against the drum wall for braking.
In terms of performance, brake pads have better heat dissipation and slower heat fade, making them suitable for high-frequency braking; brake shoes have poorer heat dissipation but a simpler structure and are more resistant to impurities, making them suitable for heavy-duty vehicles.
Replacement requires matching the system. If unsure, check the inside of the tire: if there is a brake disc, it's a disc brake (using brake pads); if there is a brake drum, it's a drum brake (using Car Brake Shoes). Regarding replacement intervals, brake pads generally need to be checked and replaced every 40,000-60,000 kilometers, while brake shoes need to be checked and replaced every 30,000-50,000 kilometers.
