The core difference among various car spark plugs lies in electrode materials. Electrode material directly determines ignition performance, high-temperature resistance, ablation resistance and service life, constituting the primary reference for vehicle owners to select and replace car spark plugs. Currently, mainstream car spark plugs equipped by automakers and circulating in the market fall into four types: nickel alloy, single platinum, single iridium and double iridium. Remarkable gaps exist in material characteristics, applicable vehicle models and usage costs for different categories to fit power units of varied loads.
Nickel alloy car spark plugs belong to basic entry-level specifications and act as original factory standard fittings for many older naturally aspirated vehicles. Their electrodes adopt nickel-chromium alloy. The advantages include low production cost and affordable price, adapting to low-load engines operating under mild working conditions with stable ignition performance to satisfy basic commuting demands. However, obvious drawbacks exist. Poor resistance to high temperature and high pressure causes easy oxidation and ablation of electrodes. Extended usage enlarges ignition gaps and weakens ignition efficiency. This type boasts the shortest service cycle, only 20,000 to 30,000 kilometers. It cannot meet demands of turbocharged and high-power engines and merely suits aging commuter vehicles.
Single platinum car spark plugs represent mid-range mainstream products. Platinum material is embedded at core electrode positions. Platinum possesses outstanding oxidation resistance and ablation resistance with a melting point far higher than nickel alloy. Under high-temperature and high-pressure engine conditions, platinum electrodes resist deformation and wear effectively. Compared with nickel alloy car spark plugs, they achieve more stable ignition and higher combustion efficiency of the air-fuel mixture, moderately boosting engine power and cutting fuel consumption. Their service life reaches 40,000 to 60,000 kilometers with outstanding comprehensive cost performance. They serve as the primary choice for most naturally aspirated passenger vehicles and mainstream replacement options recommended by authorized service centers.
Single iridium car spark plugs are mid-to-high-end products. Iridium surpasses platinum in hardness and heat resistance, allowing thinner electrode design for concentrated and precise ignition. Electric sparks deliver stronger energy, bringing more sensitive cold startup and low-speed acceleration. They effectively alleviate idling vibration and sluggish acceleration. Excellent anti-attenuation capability guarantees stable ignition performance over long durations, with usable mileage ranging from 60,000 to 80,000 kilometers. This product matches most newly launched naturally aspirated engines and small-displacement turbocharged vehicles. Balancing performance and durability, it becomes a popular upgrade choice for household automobiles.
Double iridium car spark plugs represent top-tier configuration. Both center and ground electrodes adopt iridium material to eliminate electrode ablation and oxidation comprehensively, achieving maximum resistance to high temperature and pressure. Ultra-fine electrodes realize peak ignition efficiency, fastest power response and optimal fuel economy with nearly no performance degradation. Their service life extends to 100,000 to 120,000 kilometers, eliminating frequent replacement requirements. They mainly fit large-displacement, high-power, turbocharged and direct-injection engines for vehicles enduring heavy working loads and high power requirements. The only disadvantage is relatively high sales price.
